Family Friendly Review: The Garden State Discovery Museum

Finding a place to take your children, where every single thing is geared towards them, is almost impossible.  That was until we went to the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill, NJ.  The lovely staff at the Museum asked us to come and play with the purpose of writing this review.  I heard of the Discovery Museum about a year ago through their Facebook   It was some place I always wanted to go to, but for some reason we do not travel to South Jersey that often.  We woke up early and headed about 45 minutes south on the NJ Turnpike to visit.

When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff who directed us to check out the day's programs and showtimes on a wipe board by the entrance.  We were notified that there were in fact a few class trips there.  Even though the museum was crowded, I never found it to be an issue during our visit.  This was highly different from other places I have been to.  My children were able to move around freely and there were plenty of toys to go around.

California Pizza Kitchen

Diner
The first area we played in was sponsered by the California Pizza Kitchen.  How fun it was!  A miniature restaurant, full of play food, booths, coal fired oven, and cash register.  We could have stayed here our whole visit.  I actually had to lure my children out of there to see what else the Museum offered!  Close by was the Silver Diner, a miniature Diner for children to play waitress, waiter, and cook!

As  you make your way throughout the Discovery Museum you realize that every single thing is made so that your child uses their imagination.  As you watch your child enjoy themselves and transform into a chef, doctor, construction worker or fisherman to name a few, you yourself can't help but have a smile on your face.

Vet & Pet

My children are ages 2 and 4.  Many times I find it hard to take them places where both of them can enjoy something at the same exact time.  It was nice to go to a place where we could do that.

Storybook Castle and Arts & Imagination
Throughout our visit, I noticed several workers walking throughout the facilities with "green" cleaners, cleaning the toys & equipment   I have never observed this when I have been out at attractions.  When we made our way to Storybook Castle, there was a very nice woman who was reading stories to the children.  In the same area, in Arts & Imagination, two employees were prepping arts & crafts supplies for an upcoming session.

If you have a child under the age of 4, you and your child can enjoy the Little Discoveries zone.  This is a separate section towards the back of the museum for children under the age of 4 years old.  It was a nice quiet break for a bit.

Down the Shore

Wildlife Area & Turtle Bog

Bubble Trouble

Of course there were several areas that we just were not able to visit.  But my son is already planning our second trip and I am thinking of getting a yearly membership.

Admission is $10.95 for adults and children over 12 months and $9.95 for seniors.  If you are a military family like we are, the Discovery Museum offers a discount of Buy One Get One free.  For the amount of activities and exhibits offered, I found the admission prices to be very reasonable.

The Museum is a great place to visit with your preschool groups, scouts & schools.  The museum recommends the museum for children under the age of 10 years old.

There are some great events coming up to check out too!

The museum is located just outside of Philadelphia, PA and offers a ton of free parking!

I hope you enjoy the Garden State Discovery Museum as much as my family and I did!

  2. That place looks fantastic! My son is almost a year old, and I can't wait to take him to places like this. There's a children's museum near us here in the Hampton Roads area, but I've heard it's geared more towards preschool and up.
