Pinwheel Wreath Tutorial
by: Momma Lew's Blog
For years I have been looking for a pretty wreath for my door. I never find what I am looking for, although I am not even sure what that is! You see, I have a wreath for Fall, Christmas, Winter, Valentine's Day, Easter. After that, it's a plain white door & that is SO boring to me!
So, I decided to make one! This tutorial is very easy & very cheap!
You will need:
- 3 pieces of large pieces of patterned scrapbook paper
- 3 pieces of large scrapbook paper in coordinating colors
- Glue - (elmer's or a glue stick, as well as hot glue & hot glue sticks)
- Coordinating ribbon
- Thread
- Styrofoam wreath circle
- Buttons in coordinating colors
1) Start by cutting 12 pieces of paper into 5"x5" squares. Glue your patterned pieces to your plain colored pieces to make them double sided.
2) Fold each piece in half twice to make an X shape on the paper. Then cut along the X, but make sure to stop about a half an inch from the center of the square.
3) With the solid color facing up, fold each corner to the center of the square & then glue down. Hold down so it sticks well. Do this for all 4 sides of the square to make a Pinwheel shape. Complete 12 pinwheels.
4) Now I originally planned on using straight pins to put my pinwheels on the wreath, but the glue made it too hard to get the pins through. So, I just hot glued each pinwheel to the wreath. I used 10 pinwheels and left a small space on top for the ribbon. Then, hot glue your buttons in the center of each pinwheel. Be careful the glue doesn't burn you! But if you are a seasoned crafter, you won't even feel it!
5) For your ribbon, cut about 15 inches of wide ribbon, I used gosgrain texture. To finish the ends, use a lighter just below each end to "seal" them from fraying. Criss Cross the ribbon like below & push the center of the loop in to the center. Take some thread and wind it around the area you pushed in to create a pretty bow. Wind the thread nice and tight. Trim the thread. Add your bow to the center of your wreath. With another piece of ribbon about 10-12 inches, create a large loop and glue the ends together. Glue or pin the loop to the back of your wreath where you put the bow on in the front.
6) Now you can hang up your wreath on a hook or wreath holder!
This whole wreath cost me around $6. I was able to buy the Styrofoam using a 40% Michael's coupon, the paper was 5/$1 for the plain pieces and the colored paper was 79 cents. I already had all of the other supplies in my craft stash.
Enjoy!
I might have to do this! I have seen the styrofoam wreaths at Dollar Tree and I have a ton of scrapbook paper!
